Field of Activity
I have been in the practice of commercial and business law during my whole career.

I started in the area of private client work dealing specially with family companies and direct taxation.

Since then I have worked mainly with business litigation and arbitration and dispute resolution.

I have dealt with cases in the areas of;

  • business and contractual disputes
  • international commercial disputes. I have made a special study of the law of jurisdiction and enforcements of judgements (Brussels and Lugano Conventions) and applicable law (Rome Convention). I have taught the subject at Glasgow University on an ad hoc basis. I have commented on the changes to the Brussels Convention to the law reform authorities in Scotland
  • partnership disputes
  • construction and engineering disputes
  • environmental and planning issues

My recent cases include:

  • Between January and June 2007, I appeared in the Beauly Denny Electricity Transmission Line Public Enquiry, at the strategic hearing in Perth. I appeared for Beauly Denny Landscape Group, a consortium of John Muir Trust, National Trust for Scotland, Ramblers Association Scotland, Mountaineering Council for Scotland, Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland and Scottish Wild Land Group.
  • In December 2008, I represented Merger Action Group before the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London in an attempt to halt the Lloyds TSB Bank and HBOS merger. I instructed Ian S Forrester QC and Andrew Bowen, advocate.
  • In 2009 I conducted a successful mediation on behalf of a client in a substantial claim over a disputed earn-out provision following the sale of a business.
